The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008

The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008

Product Description

As violence in Iraq reaches unnerving levels in 2006, a second front in the war rages at the highest levels of the Bush administration. In his fourth book on President George W. Bush, Bob Woodward takes readers deep inside the tensions, secret debates, unofficial backchannels, distrust and determination within the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the intelligence agencies and the U.S. military headquarters in Iraq. With unparalleled intimacy and detail, this gripping account of a president at war describes a period of distress and uncertainty within the U.S. government from 2006 through mid-2008.

The White House launches a secret strategy review that excludes the military. General George Casey, the commander in Iraq, believes that President Bush does not understand the war and eventually concludes he has lost the presidents confidence. The Joint Chiefs of Staff also conduct a secret strategy review that goes nowhere. On the verge of revolt, they worry that the military will be blamed for a failure in Iraq.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice strongly opposes a surge of additional U.S. forces and confronts the president, who replies that her suggestions would lead to failure. The president keeps his decision to fire Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from Vice President Dick Cheney until two days before he announces it. A retired Army general uses his high-level contacts to shape decisions about the war, as Bush and Cheney use him to deliver sensitive messages outside the chain of command.

For months, the administrations strategy reviews continue in secret, with no deadline and no hurry, in part because public disclosure would harm Republicans in the November 2006 elections. National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley tells Rice, "Weve got to do it under the radar screen because the electoral season is so hot."

The War Within provides an exhaustive account of the struggles of General David Petraeus, who takes over in Iraq during one of the bleakest and most violent periods of the war. It reveals how breakthroughs in military operations and surveillance account for much of the progress as violence in Iraq plummets in the middle of 2007.

Woodward interviewed key players, obtained dozens of never-before-published documents, and had nearly three hours of exclusive interviews with President Bush. The result is a stunning, firsthand history of the years from mid-2006, when the White House realizes the Iraq strategy is not working, through the decision to surge another 30,000 U.S. troops in 2007, and into mid-2008, when the war becomes a fault line in the presidential election.

The War Within addresses head-on questions of leadership, not just in war but in how we are governed and the dangers of unwarranted secrecy.

This is the concluding volume on Woodwards account of the Bush administration and it represents a significant departure from the way that this team was represented in the first and second books. Here all the chickens appear to have come home to roost and it is not a pretty picture. Conflict brings out the best and worst in people. In this book there is plenty of the latter and often too little of the former.

The portrait of the president is interesting. After reading Woodwards book I cannot imagine a more unpleasant event than to actually meet George W. Bush. I have never been a fan, but the portrait that Woodward draws here is one of a man who is at times boorish, profoundly ignorant and seemingly incapable of critical thought. Bush is eager to associate himself with past chief executives who were "war presidents" such as Washington, Lincoln and FDR. One should bear in mind that Buchanan was also a "war president" and this is the person who he seems to bear the greatest resemblance. The primary difference is that where Buchanan, even as secretary of state was too cautious, Bush was too rash. He appears to be convinced, for no apparent reason that he will prevail merely because he was convinced of the correctness of his course. Right may make right, but to prevail one needs to come up with a strategy that will work and not be unafraid to change course. Woodward cites Bushs failure to lead, I would add that he also demonstrates a failure to think.

This book is not a kind of non-fiction "Vanity Fair," which was subtitled "the novel without a hero." There are plenty of heroic and dedicated individuals in the book. General Petraeus is probably the person who comes off the best. In the previous books this role was filled by Colin Powell whose views are cited at the beginning of the book and who is as usual correct in his analysis of the situation. If I had to critique this book for any negative reason, I wish Woodward would have interviewed Colin Powell and even Rumsfield as he did Bush and Rice for the summing up chapter.

Another person who is particularly compelling is Col. (now General) H.R. McMaster. In some respects the statements made by this member of the armed forces filled the role that Colin Powell did in previous volumes. He always has a good sense of what was necessary and ground truth on the situation. Not only is he a hero from the 1991 war in Iraq, but he is also shown as an outstanding strategic thinker. I think that his book on Kennedy, Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs, and Vietnam probably is essential reading and probably something that might be read in conjunction with this series by Woodward. I was very happy to learn that McMasters was promoted in Sept 2008 and hope that he has a long career with the military. The nation needs people such as McMaster to lead.

In conclusion, this is outstanding book, somewhat scary in terms of how the government operates and how individuals can avoid responsibility. It is worth reading by every citizen interested in the war in Iraq and how we gotten to where we are.

Great.

This is Woodwards fourth book on the Bush Presidency at war. Its also, I thought, the best. As with all of Woodwards books, the reader is left to wonder how exactly Woodward acquired all of his insider information. However, it is clear he had access to the biggest players involved in the Bush Administrations efforts in Iraq. He obviously interviewed the most important people. Any criticisms from the pro-Bush crowd can be offered if those insiders feel so inclined. The White House itself issued a rebuttal of sorts, but still it seems that the bulk of Woodwards reporting has gone unchallenged. That may well be because those who know inside stuff cannot talk about it, but thats the way it goes in a democracy that treasures civil liberties and press freedoms. Whiners need not run for office (nor should anyone try to stop anyone else from whining). We can either not have the Woodward book, or we can have it with the understanding that there are likely certain inaccuracies. Ill take the latter, hands down. Those who had their mitts in devising poorly thought-out plans will have their shot at offering other perspectives (see Feith, Bolten, etc.)
This book covers the Bush Administration from early 2006 until about mid 2008. We see the President try to deal with the increasing problems that were evident in Iraq, problems that contradicted President Bushs overly optimistic public statements. We also see the efforts of those in the Pentagon, State Department, and in Iraq as they tried to come up with a strategy to address the increasing violence. As we mostly now know, the "surge" and elements often incorrectly associated with that title have reduced the violence in Iraq. What we havent known about, and what we hope Woodward is accurate about, are the discussions, arguments, etc., that went into coming up with the surge. Fascinating stuff. People of all political persuasions can take comfort in knowing that the smartest people in the world of every ideology were hard at work on the problem and all were striving with good intentions. (Certainly, good intentions do not ensure good policy and may at times encourage foolhardy policies.)
When all is said and done, Woodward offers his thoughts on President Bushs war leadership, and Woodward makes a strong case for weak war leadership. Ultimately, Bush knew things werent going well and was lying to the American people when he claimed all was well. He should have trusted the American people at an earlier stage of the war. Perhaps the Washington clock would have had a longer run time. The President should have also been more honest with himself. Contrary to claims of the right, the media was more accurate about the state of Iraq than the President was, and it seems that the President willed himself to believe things that were simply untrue. Who paid the price for those huge mistakes? He did to a small degree: his place in history will likely be among the lower ranked of our presidents. At best, he can hope for below average. We invaded Iraq because we believed that Saddam was a threat to us, and we believed Saddam was a threat because we believed he had WMDs. We now know we were wrong, and "the Decider" bears the most blame for that mistake. It was his call, and he got it wrong. Perhaps worse is that the US plan for winning there was disgracefully off the mark in every regard. From the initial invasion until final implementation of the surge, the Bush team made mistake after mistake, and history has recorded those facts. But those who paid the ultimate price for those mistakes are our brave servicemen and women and lots of Iraqis.
Personally, I dont view George W. Bush as an evil man. His intentions were pure, but pure intentions... Also, though the US effort was in disarray in 2006, and although we know who is ultimately responsible for that tragic state of affairs, perhaps the best that can be said of President Bush is that he may have been the one man who could have made the surge the reality it needed to be because of his own mistakes. Time will tell, but the time that has passed so far is not flattering to President Bush, and Woodward writes about it in captivating detail.

I must have been in the right state of mind because I loved this book! This is Bob Woodwards 4th book on the presidency of George W. Bush and like the first 3, The War Within takes you behind the scenes of the White House and the political/military players between 2006 and 2008 when the war in Iraq seemed to get worse every day.

Woodward explores the secrecy of a White House not wanted to show the American public its problems. The war was a mess and no one had a plan. Woodward doesnt come across as someone who is politically motivated to smear the President. In the epilogue he does promote his other books which I found tiresome, but he waits until the very end to express his own opinions on the story.

Whether you support President Bush or not, this book takes you where the decisions, arguments, and discussions took place without the public knowing. It gives just a taste of how this administration worked...or failed to work.

One of the reasons why I really enjoyed this book was because of the place I am in. I was connecting with the ideas behind it. I was looking at it from a leadership standpoint. What do you do when a plan is not working, in fact its doing the opposite?

This book will not be for everyone. I know there are many people who could care less about government and politics and thats fine. But since this is my blog and I read this book, I decided to post it and let you know that it was a good read.

It has a few pictures so some of you may enjoy that part of it!

This book is a great continuation of the Bush Presidency series and is a must read for anyone who follows White House and Washington political exploits. The book like Woodwards prior, reads fast and captures the urgency of the moment. Bobs books are a "Must Have" in any political enthusiasts library.
The kind of book I like
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
I am a sucker for a book about the inner workings of a Presidency, the good Presidencies the bad Presidencies, the good books the bad books. There is some talk about quotes in the book not being accurate and that is typical of all such books, it is hard to get a straight quote without someone coloring it, the ones that said it or someone else, so I always take direct quotes with a grain of salt. Some thought Woodward is over critical of Bush, I like Bush and I didnt see that, the inside is always ugly, there are decisions and big egos, always has been and always will be. People that make light of the Presidency have no idea how hard that job is, especially during war time when you have to make decisions that affect the actual life and death of your soldiers and the affects on their families. I find it hard to believe that any President would take that responsibility lightly. My wife picked this up for me, she knows it is the kind of book I enjoy, so I cant say that made a big decision to buy the book. For someone that was suppose to have a closed Presidency, Bush was sure open and generous with his time with Woodward, someone that isnt always his biggest supporter. I suspect there is more truth in this book than fiction and Woodward is easy to read. I am not going to get into the nuts and bolts of the book, others have done that eloquently. I will say, if your the kind of person that likes to read a book about the inside workings of Government and the White House in particular you will like this book for all its warts. I will never check back here for comments, so if you have one, email me barrym@tds.net

I was often puzzled by employees in their early 20s. They brought different values, expectations and skills to the workplace. My job was to teach them the service ethic, to keep them long enough to get the benefit of my training efforts and keep them motivated to put in a good days work.
This book addresses those issues. Any employer today needs to inform themselves on how to deal with this age group.

The authors bring out a few interesting points, but this book seems to be aimed towards reconciliation between builders (pre WW2 generation) and the rest of us. It paints a picture of each generation that could at best be called cartoonish. At worst, the picture painted is stereotypical generalizations drawn from a world where everyone is white and generations are easily classified. The chief problem with this book is its age. It fails to paint an accurate picture of todays generational divides due to its age.

This book does create some interesting thoughts, but would be most useful in an aging church that is trying to change its mission to include younger generations.
    Ultimately unsatisfying
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :10
This book has a few pieces of useful information ... but overall there are many much better books out there about generations and how they differ (e.g., Generation Me, When Generations Collide, Generations). The authors take a spattering of information from other sources (they are not researchers or policy makers themselves), tell a few narratives, and thats about it. You are much better off buying another book on generations.

Also, notice the publisher: Focus on the Family. Thus the book is written from an explictly stated Christian perspective. For some readers this might be a bonus others might be put off by this in a book that is not about religion.
A History of Change and Values in America
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :2
It was very helpful to explain generational differences using a decade analysis approach. Stories and conversations used to illustrate the socio-economic and technological changes for each decade were also helpful in giving the reader a better understanding of how much impact each decade has on our values and perspectives. Although the authors base their assumptions that character and personality are determined around age 10, his theoretical model is quite accurate in helping assess each decade. If I dont give it a 5 it is because in my opinion the book does not reveal any new facts not explored before that talk about generational differences. The differences between Baby Boomers and other generations have been a long-discussed topic. Nevertheless, the fact that they bothered discussing each decade and its impact on values in America is engaging and invites for further discussion on this issue.
boo to "soccer moms" and hurray for working women everywhere
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :6
I agree with the previous reviewer who wrote of the guilt trip that this book gives to working mothers. I am an Australian who is residing in the USA, and I am shocked and appalled at the American attitude towards working mothers. In Australia it is the norm for women to pursue careers and work in fulltime jobs, whether they are single, married, de facto, mothers, young, old, whatever. Childcare is a policy issue for government, is often subsidised, and considered imperative for the growth of the economy and the wellbeing of the community. What assistance does the American government give to working mothers?! How does the American media portray mothers of Generation X?! The attitude here is so far behind it is laughable. For American authors to claim authority over subjects such as Generation X and its place on the world stage, they will need to update their ideas and look to other societies as well as their own.

Darfur A 21st Century Genocide Third Edition Crises in World Politics
    Binding: Paperback

    Studio: Cornell University Press
Praise for the 2005 Edition-- "A passionate and highly readable account of the current tragedy that combines intimate knowledge of the region's history, politics, and sociology with a telling cynicism about the polite but ineffectual diplomatic efforts to end it. It is the best account available of the Darfur crisis."--Foreign Affairs "Does the conflict in Darfur, however bloody, qualify as genocide? Or does the application of the word 'genocide' to Darfur make it harder to understand this conflict in its awful peculiarity? Is it possible that applying a generic label to Darfurian violence makes the task of stopping it harder? Or is questioning the label simply insensitive, implying that whatever has happened in Darfur isn't horrible enough to justify a claim on the world's conscience, and thus invite inaction or even the dismissal of Darfur altogether? These questions lie at the heart of a much-needed new book by Gerard Prunier. In Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide, Prunier casts aside labels and lays bare the anatomy of the Darfur crisis, drawing on a mixture of history and journalism to produce the most important book of the year on any African subject."--Salon.com "The emergency in Darfur in western Sudan is far from over, as Gérard Prunier points out in this comprehensive and authoritative book. . . . He concisely covers the history, the conflicts, and the players. . . . Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide is essential for anyone wanting to learn about this complex conflict."--Library Journal "If Darfuris are Muslim, what is their quarrel with the Islamic government in Khartoum? If they and the janjaweed-'evil horsemen'-driving them from their homes are both black, how can it be Arab versus African? If the Sudanese government is making peace with the south, why would it be risking that by waging war in the west? Above all, is it genocide? Gérard Prunier has the answers. An ethnographer and renowned Africa analyst, he turns on the evasions of Khartoum the uncompromising eye that dissected Hutu power excuses for the Rwanda genocide a decade ago."--The Guardian Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide explains what lies behind the conflict in Western Sudan, how it came about, why it is should not be oversimplified, and why it is so relevant to the future of Africa. As the world watches, governments decide if, when, and how to intervene, and international organizations struggle to distribute aid, Gérard Prunier's book provide crucial assistance. The third edition features a new chapter covering events through mid-2008.

The Dynamics of Violence in Central Africa National and Ethnic Conflict in the 21st Century
    Binding: Hardcover
    Rating: 4.0
    Review: 11
    Studio: University of Pennsylvania Press
Endowed with natural resources, majestic bodies of fresh water, and a relatively mild climate, the Great Lakes region of Central Africa has also been the site of some of the world's bloodiest atrocities. In Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo-Kinshasa, decades of colonial subjugation--most infamously under Belgium's Leopold II--were followed by decades of civil warfare that spilled into neighboring countries. When these conflicts lead to horrors such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide, ethnic difference and postcolonial legacies are commonly blamed, but, with so much at stake, such simple explanations cannot take the place of detailed, dispassionate analysis. The Dynamics of Violence in Central Africa provides a thorough exploration of the contemporary crises in the region. By focusing on the historical and social forces behind the cycles of bloodshed in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo-Kinshasa, René Lemarchand challenges much of the conventional wisdom about the roots of civil strife in former Belgian Africa. He offers telling insights into the appalling cycle of genocidal violence, ethnic strife, and civil war that has made the Great Lakes region of Central Africa the most violent in the continent, and sheds new light on the dynamics of conflict in the region.Building on a full career of scholarship and fieldwork, Lemarchand's analysis breaks new ground in our understanding of the complex historical forces that continue to shape the destinies of one of Africa's most important regions.

If your workplace feels like a battle zone and colleagues sometimes act like adversaries, you ore not alone. Today four generations glare at one another across the conference table, and the potential for conflict and confusion has never been greater. Traditionalist employees with their "heads down, onward and upward" attitude live out a work ethic shaped during the Great Depression. Eighty million Baby Boomers vacillate between their overwhelming need to succeed and their growing desire to slow down and enjoy life. Generation Xers try to prove themselves constantly yet dislike the image of being overly ambitious, disrespectful, and irreverent. Millennials, new to the workforce, mix savvy with social conscience and promise to further change the business landscape. This insightful book provides hands-on methods to close the generation gaps. Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :1
I think the fellow below got it a bit wrong, this is not a full-length album but a mini-CD, sort of a preview of Darkwells next full-length, so there are only six songs here. And, the multi-media track wasnt fully cooperative on my computer, but its there, and mainly features videos of the two live versions of the songs from Suspiria which appear on this CD (it was interesting seeing the band live, but somebody seemed to have had a little too much fun with some special effects which sadly detracted from the videos a bit... Id say you arent missing out on a whole lot if you cant see the multimedia track, dont lose any sleep over it.)

I didnt feel quite as "comfortable" with this CD as I do with Suspiria, it really doesnt feel quite complete in the production or something, which keeps me from rating it any higher, which is a shame because I like the band, the new songs show great promise, and the live vocals were amazing - I didnt know what to expect, but Alexandras voice sounds at least as good live as it does on Suspiria.

No, this isnt another Suspiria, nor was it meant to be, but Id hardly call it a complete rip-off or anything. Based on what I hear on this disc, I look forward to the full-length, especially because of "The Crucible" and "Twist in My Sobriety", which are at least as strong as anything from Suspiria.

An energetic CD with 2 bonus videos
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
I really liked this CD. Its run-time was just over 30 minutes but it had 5 new tracks from one of the best new Goth-Metal bands out there. The live performances of the Salvation and Realm of Darkness were excellent. The Bonus Multimedia Tracks can be accessed through a computers CD-Rom drive. They are videos of the Salvation and Realm of Darkness. Suspira was a Goth-Metal CD with heavy guitars and a singer with classical voice training. Conflict of Interest continues the tradition.

Now, I really liked Suspiria, but it shows that they put little effort into Conflict.. mainly because there are only 5 or 6 new songs on it, which are all just average. Maybe Im just imaginning it, but thier Bonus Multimedia Track is oddly missing. Do they count her saying thank you to the crowd as Multimedia? Dou Donggo Justice Conflict and Morality in an Indonesian Society
    Binding: Paperback
Studio: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
This study of justice and morality among the Dou Donggo, a highland people in Indonesia, offers an innovative approach to understanding the workings of law and dispute settlement in small communities. Peter Just argues that the operation of any legal system is best understood in the context of its moral ontology: the fundamental culture assumptions that the people have about the nature of the world, the beings that inhabit it, and their relationships to one another, as well as ideas about causation, liability, etc. The author takes Dou Donggo beliefs in evil spirits and tutelary gods, theories of conception and bodily humors, and the magical powers of judges who are also healers and links them to the guiding principles and day-to-day operation of a consensual system of justice. The first part of the book provides contextualizing material on current debates about ethnography and the anthropology of law, a lively account of the author's field experiences, and a history of the Dou Donggo. Two subsequent chapters use anecdotes and examples to explicate the constitution of the village as a moral community and the moral ontology on which that community is based. Concluding chapters provide a "thick description" of three real disputes witnessed by the author.

This study, a comprehensive philosophical and legal analysis of the gray area in which the foundations of law and morality clash, views these oblique circumstances from two perspectives: that of the person who faces a possible conflict between the claims of morality and law and must choose whether or not to obey the penal code; and that of the people who make and uphold laws and must decide whether to treat someone with a moral claim to disobey differently from ordinary lawbreakers. In examining the extent of the obligations owed by citizens to their government, Greenawalt concentrates on the possible existence of a single source of obligation that reaches all citizens and all laws. He also discusses techniques of amelioration of punishment for conscientious lawbreakers, asking how far legal systems should go to accomodate individuals who break the law for reason of conscience. Drawing from numerous examples of conflicts between law and morality, Greeawalt illustrates in detail the positions and predicaments of potential lawbreakers and lawmakers alike.

Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that 27 Dresses opens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Janes hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latters superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Janes boss and the object of her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that hes on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Janes pain palpable and conveys her characters inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was in The Heartbreak Kid, and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletchers direction is vibrant. --Tom Keogh

Until her younger sister Tess captures the heart of Janes boss -- on whom Jane has a secret crush inspiring Jane to change her "always-a-bridesmaid" destiny.

Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
I really like this movie. It is light and breezy and it put me in mind of In Her Shoes with Toni Colette and Cameron Diaz. This movie was a little heavier but the storylines are similiar. At least to me they are. In fact, the scene when her self centered sister rips into her about the newspaper item she starts sounding as if she went to the Cameron Diaz school of acting. The actor who plays her (K. Heigel) love interest I enjoyed from his playing the prince in Enchanted. I kept waiting for him to either sing or say A Date! Whats a date? LOL!! I do recommend this movie as a buy.
Expected a lot more...very, very juvenile

Oh my, I dont know what happened here but it seems that Katherine Heigl lost her acting ability in this movie...I kept wondering how this could be the same actress thats on television every Thursday night. All of the acting in this movie was overdone. I was surprised at just how bad it all was....story, acting, directing. It was so predictable and the characters were so elementary. The saving grace and the only reason this got 2 stars from me (and the reason I continued to watch even after I realized how bad it was) was James Marsden. His acting was good and the guy is beyond gorgeous. I think he puts Pitt and Clooney to shame. Im surprised we havent seen him as a leading man in more movies. Im not sure that being able to look at this exceedingly handsome man for over an hour is enough to recommend the movie to anyone though. Very disappointing.

I bought this DVD as a Christmas gift for a 32 year old who saw the movie and enjoyed it enough that they want to have their own DVD of the movie. I also saw the movie and thought it was a very enjoyable romantic comedy.
    Better than I hoped for!

Even though it arrived in a pink case that was badly cracked, I didnt mind as I just transfered the cover into another case. I decided to watch the movie during the day while I was ironing. Certain parts at the end made me a little teary, and think of my sister. I recommended it to 2 20-year old twins trying to grow up and relate to each other as individuals - they LOVED it to. They sat together shoulder to shoulder watching, laughing and even crying a bit. Good fun, I think a guy could watch it and be entertained also by some of the scenes that are so funny.

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
Much of the stress we experience comes not from the workplace but from our reactions to our workplace. Most of Carlsons little book focuses on how we need to change our attitudes in order to minimize stress. For instance, work should be seen as something that we get to do rather than something that we have to do. Enjoy life now--dont wait for retirement!

Problems should be seen as speed bumps to negotiate gracefully, not barriers to be resented. One should recognize that life is full of hassles, and that these should be handled in stride. One should lay off the ego, because constant comparison with others will only raise ones stress. Workplace meetings, instead of being stewed at as unnecessary or boring, should be seen as challenges to learn something new.

Carlson also gives some practical pointers for minimizing work-related stress. For instance, if we feel hurried in the morning, we should get up earlier to give us more time to get ready for work. Long commutes to work, instead of being hated as a waste of time, should be profitably spent listening to books on tape. To avoid the stress caused by constant phone calls, we should have a "no phone" time when we dont answer the phone. Voice mail should be used more often. To dissipate general stress, we should spend ten minutes each day doing absolutely nothing. And, since vacation trips themselves can be stressful, we should spend more of our vacations puttering around at home or visiting local events and places.

A book which can be helpful in teaching a good attitude towards life

It is possible to pooh- pooh self- help , power of positive thinking books or to try and learn from them. I take the latter approach. My idea is always that if I learn one good thing from them I have profited.
This is particularly engaging and helpful self- help book. There are one hundred small essays on such topics as Dont Sweat the Small Stuff Relax Breathe before you speak Allow yourself to be bored Repeat to yourself, " Life is not an Emergency" , Lower your tolerance to Stress, Become more patient Surrender to the fact that life isnt fair Let others be right most of the time Choose your battles wisely Look beyond behavior Become a better listener Set aside quiet time every day Imagine that everyone is enlightened except you Smile to strangers, look into their eyes and say hello.
What is surprising is though you think you might know most of this stuff you will probably be induced to practice a bit more by reading the work.
I very much liked this book. Its aim is to make people better and happier. I think it can do that.
What is nice about it is that the major ideas are given in the chapter- titles and then the small essays illustrate them and slightly elaborate upon them.
A few more of the chapters are as follows:
" Practice Random Acts of Kindness Spend a Moment every day thinking of someone to thank Learn to live in the present moment Resist the urge to criticize Choose being kind over being right Search for the grain of truth in other opinions Read articles and books with entirely different points of view from your own and try to learn somethingStop Blaming others Get comfortable not knowing Lighten up Dont interrupt others or finish their sentencesRemember that everything has Gods fingerprints on it.
One problem of course is that a lot of this is easier said than done. Take fill your life with love Thats a hard one for many who have been trying and getting nowhere. Nonetheless the intention and direction are good.
They are in the spirit of my own attitude in reviewing books, " Try to find something good in it, and something good to say about it. And only criticize it if it is absolutely necessary.

Crisis and Crossfire The United States and the Middle East Since 1945 Issues in the History of American Foreign Relations
    Binding: Paperback
    Rating: 4.5

    Studio: Potomac Books Inc.
Although it seems almost incredible today, the United States had relatively little interest in the Middle East before 1945. But the dynamics and outcome of World War II elevated the importance of the Middle East in the American mind, and the United States has viewed the region with vital interest to its security and economy ever since. The projection of American power into the region has had consequences that have forever changed the United States and the Middle East, with the rise of al Qaeda and the turbulent occupation of Iraq being the latest examples. Crisis and Crossfire surveys and analyzes the broad contours of U.S. involvement in the region. It probes the reasons why the United States implemented various policies and assesses the wisdom of American leaders as they accepted greater responsibilities for preserving stability and security in the Middle East. Major themes include U.S.-Middle East policy in the context of the Cold War, the rise of Arab and Iranian nationalism, decolonization, the U.S. approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the politics of Western dependence on Middle Eastern oil, and Americas military interventions, particularly its two wars against Iraq. This books concise narrative and selection of primary-source documents make it an ideal introduction to U.S.-Middle East relations for students and for anyone with an interest in understanding the history behind todays events.

South Asia has been the setting for some of the century's most violent invasions, the Western world's bloodiest defeats, and a volatile geopolitical brew of religions, ethnicities, and nationalism that sends unsettling ripples through the global balance of power even today. Rob Johnson writes here the engrossing history of the individual conflicts that have engulfed the states of South Asia during the last half century. A Region in Turmoil offers a new perspective on the area, drawing together the conflicts of South Asia and examining them in local and global contexts, from the end of the Western colonial empires through today's global efforts to combat terrorism. Johnson's incisive analysis breaks down the historical and political roots of the conflicts and departs from traditional Western-centric paradigms to reveal heretofore overlooked South Asian viewpoints on the conflicts and connections among the wars. He probes the causes, contexts, and conclusions of the conflicts, ranging from the enduring insurgency in Myanmar to the struggle of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the unrest in the Punjab and Assam states, the Bangladeshi war of independence, and the intractable struggles in Kashmir and Afghanistan. The twenty-first century opened with South Asia front and center on a turbulent political stage: the region is not only the designated frontline for the "war on terror" but also home to the newest nuclear powers, India and Pakistan. A Region in Turmoil addresses this critical contemporary crisis with an invaluable analysis of the region and its complex history, making it essential reading for historians, policymakers, and anyone who reads the front page of the daily newspaper.
