The Dynamics of Violence in Central Africa National and Ethnic Conflict in the 21st Century
Binding: Hardcover
Studio: University of Pennsylvania Press
Endowed with natural resources, majestic bodies of fresh water, and a relatively mild climate, the Great Lakes region of Central Africa has also been the site of some of the world's bloodiest atrocities. In Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo-Kinshasa, decades of colonial subjugation--most infamously under Belgium's Leopold II--were followed by decades of civil warfare that spilled into neighboring countries. When these conflicts lead to horrors such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide, ethnic difference and postcolonial legacies are commonly blamed, but, with so much at stake, such simple explanations cannot take the place of detailed, dispassionate analysis. The Dynamics of Violence in Central Africa provides a thorough exploration of the contemporary crises in the region. By focusing on the historical and social forces behind the cycles of bloodshed in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo-Kinshasa, René Lemarchand challenges much of the conventional wisdom about the roots of civil strife in former Belgian Africa. He offers telling insights into the appalling cycle of genocidal violence, ethnic strife, and civil war that has made the Great Lakes region of Central Africa the most violent in the continent, and sheds new light on the dynamics of conflict in the region.Building on a full career of scholarship and fieldwork, Lemarchand's analysis breaks new ground in our understanding of the complex historical forces that continue to shape the destinies of one of Africa's most important regions.

Miscommunication Employee conflict Work ethic debates Loyalty issues Varying wants and needs

If you are a manager, human resources professional, or business owner, you are faced with these types of issues every day. But why?

Because currently, there are five generations in the workplace: Radio Babies (born during 1930-1945) Baby Boomers (1946-1964) Generation X (1965-1976) Generation Y (1977-1991) even some Millennials (1991 and later). Each of them has a different perspective, based on their upbringing and daily lives. The key to making encounters between the generations successful is learning to understand the point of view of each generation and respect their differences.

The individuals and organizations that do this will be the ones to succeed. This book will show you how.

Authors Gravett and Throckmorton take a dynamic approach to the situation by writing in two distinct voicesas a Baby Boomer and a Gen-Xerusing a "point-counterpoint" approach to identify differences and similarities across generations.

They share hands-on experiences, real-life cases, recommended solutions, and ground-breaking research on how members of any generation can better relate to minimize conflict, miscommunication, and wasted energy. You will learn what each generation thinks of the others and how each wishes the others viewed it.

Bridging the Generation Gap is filled with strategies and solutions you can implement immediately to help build your own bridge between the generations.

Crucible Of Conflict: Tamil And Muslim Society On The East Coast Of Sri Lanka

Crucible of Conflict: Tamil and Muslim Society on the East Coast of Sri Lanka

    Product Description

Crucible of Conflict is an ethnographic and historical study of Hindu castes, matrilineal family structure, popular religious traditions, and ethnic conflict. It is also the first full-length ethnography of Sri Lankas east coast, an area that suffered heavily in the 2004 tsunami and that is of vital significance to the political future of the island nation. Since the bitter guerrilla war for an independent Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka broke out in 1983, the easternmost region of the island has emerged as a strategic site of conflict. Dennis B. McGilvray argues that any long-term resolution of the ethnic conflict must accommodate this region, in which Sinhalese Buddhists, Tamil Hindus, and Tamil-speaking Muslims are each a significant share of the population.

McGilvray explores the densely populated farming and fishing settlements in this coastal zone, focusing on the Tamil and Muslim inhabitants of an agricultural town in the Ampara District. Drawing on fieldwork conducted over more than thirty years as well as on Tamil and Dutch historical sources, he describes the regional dominance of a non-Brahmin matrilineal caste of thirteenth-century Kerala origin. The Muslims, who acquired dowry lands and matrilineal family patterns through local intermarriages, have in the twentieth century emerged from Hindu caste domination and are now the Tamil Hindus political and economic equals. Crucible of Conflict offers a uniquely detailed account of Muslim kinship and community organization in eastern Sri Lanka, as well as a comparison of Tamil and Muslim practices and institutions. McGilvray concludes with an analysis of the interethnic tensions and communal violence that have intensified in recent years.

Postcolonial Europe in the Crucible of Cultures: Reckoning with God in a World of Conflicts.

    Product Description

Over the past forty years Europe has grown as a global presence and today it plays an important role in a variety of ways: politically, socially, economically, and culturally. European theologians have no choice but to take cognizance of this fact and respond to the broad social challenges by clarifying their views on God and being a prophetic voice in cultural, political and social decision-making. The authors in this volume take up four main contemporary global challenges, i.e. globalization, violence, gender, and the environment, and the volume provides its readers with first-rate theological reflections in Europe. The articles offered here are the result of an intensive workshop held in Leuven in September 2004 and are sponsored by the European Commission and the VLIR, as part of a three-year study program on the understanding of God in Europe.

The Rebel: An Essay On Man In Revolt

The Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt

    Product Description

By one of the most profoundly influential thinkers of our century, The Rebel is a classic essay on revolution. For Albert Camus, the urge to revolt is one of the "essential dimensions" of human nature, manifested in mans timeless Promethean struggle against the conditions of his existence, as well as the popular uprisings against established orders throughout history. And yet, with an eye toward the French Revolution and its regicides and deicides, he shows how inevitably the course of revolution leads to tyranny. As old regimes throughout the world collapse, The Rebel resonates as an ardent, eloquent, and supremely rational voice of conscience for our tumultuous times.

"The Rebel is a piece of reasoning in the great tradition of French logic....But what is so exhilarating about Camuss essay is that here is the voice of a man of unshakable decency." -- Atlantic

"Camuss book is one of the extremely few that express the contemporary hour...yet profoundly transcend it." -- New Republic

Customer ReviewsCamus eclipses nihilism and brings news of a new age!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :15
I first became interested in Albert Camus after reading a quote from The Rebel online. "I rebel, therefore we exist" was the quote, and I must admit that, after reading the book, there has never been anything truer written. When I was in a bookstore a few months ago I found a copy of The Rebel, which is apparently a rare sight these days, since The Rebel is often ignored. Camus is one of the most famous writers of the 20th century, so why would one of his masterpieces be ignored?

It has been ignored, from what I can gather, because it is a philosophical work in which Camus pulls no punches and examines thoroughly why the excessive crime and violence of our era exist. Camus explains how, in both philosophy and politics, the reigning attitude has been one of nihilism for the past two centuries. This nihilism, being necessarily without an aim, leads to dictatorship and gross amounts of suffering for humans, no matter what principles it claims on the surface. Camus systematically destroys those who have used the philosophies of Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx, surrealism, u.s.w., to justify their murderous plots.

Camus proposes that instead of nihilism and murder, we take to heart the ancient concepts of moderation and responsibility. Camus destruction of modern governents and his proposals of these ancient ideas seem to have made this book unpopular. In this era of oppression, it is easy to ignore what offends us or makes us think. Camus gives the reader no choice. He must either raise a defiant fist to the giants of power, or he must give way to these minds that are utterly without scruples. I admire Camus deeply because of this--he has summed up the ideas I have been carrying around for years--but some will be deeply hurt by his comments. I leave you with a final thought: everyone is partly to blame for the state of the present and the future. You have the choice to make it either good or bad.

An inquiry into the ethics of rebellion
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
This book followed his The Myth of Sisyphus. Camus explains in the beginning that while his previous work was about the question of suicide, this one is about the other aspect of taking human lives - other peoples lives (murder). The book however is not so much about murder, as it is about the ethics of rebellion.

At a deeper ideological level, Camus was reacting to the excesses of Soviet style communism with which he disagreed. He felt that rebellion is always at the risk of falling prey to the very tyranny it revolts against and destroys.

Camus however does not believe that rebellion is therefore not desirable. His humanitarian ideals harmonize with the dream of rebellion. So he tries to answer the question of how rebellion can escape falling prey to tyranny, albiet unsuccessfully, by taking the examples of Russian nihilists who fought tyranny through murder, but nevertheless punished themsleves for that act (because the act of murder becomes tyrranny if routinized).

In all his works, Camus is generally good with analysis but poor in his conclusions. This book is brilliant for its analysis of the ethics of rebellion and the dilemmas of a rebel. It raises important questions and leaves you free to find your own answers. That also harmonizes better with the spirit of existentialism.
The Rebel meets every expectation set out by The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
Camus The Rebel is yet another brilliant outcry of the human conscience, the urge to revolt and mans timeless struggle against the conditions of his existence. Albert Camus is one of the most profoundly influential thinkers of this century. The Rebel is a definite must read for lovers of Letranger and Myth of Sisyphus. Camus maintains his signature style of short, simple yet hard-hitting sentences that leave a lot to the imagination, thus giving the reader a chance to re-create their our vision. One of the best writers to come out of France, Camus sharp eye toward the French Revolution shows how inevitably the course of revolution leads to tyranny. Much like his predecessors such as Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky, Albert Camus writes with an unshakable decency and his work is eloquent and supremely rational.
BETTER TO DIE ON ONES FEET THAN TO LIVE ON ONES KNEES...
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
Camus The Rebel has stood the test of time and will continue to educate, inspire and empower those who read his essay. This book influenced MLK who understood the spirit of rebellion and applied its principles. Whether we talk Gandhi, Sade, Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Dean, Brando... the list goes on. With rebellion awareness is born. Read The Rebel and change your life... quit your job. End a dead-end relationship. Move on. Fight a law. Disagree with someone. Color outside the lines. Say no. Say no instead of yes. Start a revolution and change the world. Sedition is the way to a better existence.
    A work of genuis
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
I have never read a book by Camus I didnt like, and this series of essays on mans inclination if not inborne need to rebel is one more example how how Camus has cemented himself as one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century.
I only wish I had read this book when I was younger, I would have gained a better navigator for my own rebellious nature. Camus research is provided in a series of essays that cover every major concept man has to rebel against. His examples are historic, unique, and facinating.

The ultimate test of a game is that it contains exciting gameplay - gripping challenges for the player to overcome. These challenges are almost always in the form of physical obstacles or living creatures of some sort - human, animal, supernatural or alien life forms. Unfortunately, the physical challenges offered in most games are unimaginative and predictable and as for the bad guys, they are usually stereotypes weve seen a hundred times before... all too often, anonymous figures firing weapons at us. Pamela Jaye Smiths book is a refreshing antidote to all that -- full of excellent ideas on how to create dramatic obstacles and unique, powerful, fully dimensional antagonists.

As a video game designer, writer and sometimes-actor, I found Inner Drives to be incredibly useful in outlining stories and breathing life into complex protagonists -- and now Ms. Smith has outdone herself. Though stories in general can come in many different forms, for video games almost invariably require an element of darkness, and we must push the boundaries of story-telling to hold the attentions of our audience in an increasingly competitive landscape.

My copy of "The Power of the Dark Side" is now dog-eared, underlined, and scribbled with notes in the margin. I assure you I will be turning back to it time and time again, whenever I need a fresh take on the darker side of humanity. And Ms. Smiths gift of comedic insight makes the learning process exceedingly enjoyable!
    Unexplained Terms & Too Referential
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :3
Not my favorite writing reference ever.

    1) The author relies heavily on strings of movie names in support of her points, then fails to explain how those movies demonstrate the point in question. The examples provided are useless unless you have seen the movies in question.

    2) The book continually references "chakra" terminology (described as "inner drive / center of motivation"), but nowhere does the author offer an overview of the chakra system for the uninitiated.

    3) The book meanders off topic. As often as not, the author is discusses how "good guys" display and/or respond to the "dark side" traits, rather than focusing on how to develop really strong villains that will drive a story forward.

    4) Finally, one does wish her writing would be less sloppy. Sentence fragments, misplaced modifiers and other symptoms of lazy writing pepper the entire manuscript, and add to the overall impression that the work was not well planned or edited.
    Super!

Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
This is a good book to give to high school or college graduates who are embarking on their first jobs. The book discusses future trends, Gen Y characteristics and how they may clash with those of older generations, the personality types and the most suitable professions. It also sprinkles on some future predictions of the workplace. Lastly, it discusses ways to mesh with the older generations at work. This is a good life and career road map to better understand oneself, ones career choices, and getting along with ones co-workers.

Generation Y enters the workforce with Facebook, text messaging and email savvy - but also with habits termed narcissistic and impatient in the traditional work world. PLUGGED IN is for Generation Y and helps these members plug their unique abilities into the changing work world. More than just a career guide, it covers how to use generational differences to business advantage, and is a must for any comprehensive business collection.

Fine--but wrong format? Or wrong target audience?
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
The promotional blurb reads, in part, "Erickson admits that her own Generation Y son informed her that he would prefer to consult a blog for career advice rather than dead-tree technology." Its a good point. Theres nothing fundamentally wrong with the content of this book, but is the target audience really going to want to read it? And is Harvard Business School Press going to know how to market it properly to that demographic? I wonder.

Heres another salient bit: "Despite gearing her message to younger workers, Ericksons effort speaks to a much broader audience: her examination of what influences and motivates this emerging generation would be of interest to potential employers and marketers." Id be interested to see a breakdown of sales. Will it mostly be Gen-Y folks buying this, or will it in fact be potential employers -- or even Gen-X types and baby boomers seeking to understand their competition? Im a member of Generation X myself. I wonder if directing this at us, instead, would have made for a better book.

Perhaps that can be Ericksons follow-up?
For my son , but I read it too

As my son is part of the Generation Y , I thought this would be a good read for him , now that he is past the age of fatherly advice (at least he thinks he is).
Creative and informative , this book presents many thoughtful ideas and approaches for success in ones work life. Although many of the principals could apply to any generation of worker , it is specifically geared to those born after 1980.

Do yourself , and your child a favor , give this for Christmas instead of (or in addition to) the latest video game.
This Kind of a Book Only Comes Along About Once a Decade.
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Last week while I was reading this book I met my youngest son at a Boston Sports Bar for dinner. I arrived early and my "Y" Generation son arrived slightly later. He asked what I was reading and I told him it was about him--the "Y" Generation. He asked if he could see it while we waited for his girl friend to arrive. He became absorbed in the book almost immediately while I watched the Celtics game. When his girl friend showed up she commented on the fact that she had never seen Eric reading a book. She said he only read his computer screen. Now I knew better, since I was his father. He reads a lot, but probably not around his girl friend who might consider it impolite to read in front of her.
Anyway, the three of us discussed the book and I practically had to pry it away from my son when our meal was complete. I told him he could borrow it as soon as I finished my review. He said he was looking forward to it.
Over the years, I recall several books similar to this one that fascinated me. One of them was "Future Shock." Previous to that "The Media is the Message" had a similar effect on me. More recently I enjoyed "The Millionaire Next Door."
Based on my own personal experience with both the "X Generation" and "Generation Y" I think this book has hit the nail right on the head. Its difficult to give much detail about the authors message because each page is packed with fascinating observations including many charts and graphs depicting her research on the subject. Basically this book defines the "Y" Generation as well as the "X" Generation and the Baby Boomers. It compares how they grew up, what influenced each of them and how that effects how they think and do things. The "Y" Generation comprises the people born between 1980 and the first few years of 2000. They are the first generation that was "plugged in" to technology from the time they were born. Use of technology and the Internet and networking in all its forms is as natural to them as breathing. The author goes into great detail explaining how the "Y" Generation, which is slightly larger than the Baby Boom Generation in the USA but more than double the size of the Baby Boomers on a global scale will soon be moving into and changing the worlds workforce. Since with medical advances, most of this generation will live to be 100 years old and in many cases will be working for 60 or 70 years, they will probably achieve success and satisfaction in at least three major careers during their life times. The author uses her research to explore what motivates Generation Y and why their motivating factors and work style is so different from the Traditionalists, Boomers, and Generation X.
In college I was a sociology major with an economics minor so I naturally found this material fascinating, but its so well written that its difficult not to get hooked on it. While its not exactly what Id call a "page turner" I found I liked it well enough to carry it in my coat pocket so I could read it at the slightest opportunity. I read it instead of the newspaper. For those people who are the parents of Generation Y or are working with them, this should be required reading. The author has some really marvelous insights that she gained from her extensive research. There are also many surprises in store for the reader. She finds that the power of positive thinking is still as important as it ever was. So take heart, we older folks arent completely out of the equation as yet and this book clues in Generation Y as to how we think and how to work in harmony with us even if what we do and think seems very old fashioned to them. It also provides us cave men some helpful information on how to understand and work in harmony with the "Y Generation." This is a manual for getting along and finding satisfaction in the world of work. Im delighted I found it.

Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else

    Product Description

Expanding on a landmark cover story in Fortune, a top journalist debunks the myths of exceptional performance.

One of the most popular Fortune articles in many years was a cover story called What It Takes to Be Great. Geoff Colvin offered new evidence that top performers in any field--from Tiger Woods and Winston Churchill to Warren Buffett and Jack Welch--are not determined by their inborn talents. Greatness doesnt come from DNA but from practice and perseverance honed over decades.

And not just plain old hard work, like your grandmother might have advocated, but a very specific kind of work. The key is how you practice, how you analyze the results of your progress and learn from your mistakes, that enables you to achieve greatness.

Now Colvin has expanded his article with much more scientific background and real-world examples. He shows that the skills of businessnegotiating deals, evaluating financial statements, and all the restobey the principles that lead to greatness, so that anyone can get better at them with the right kind of effort. Even the hardest decisions and interactions can be systematically improved.

This new mind-set, combined with Colvins practical advice, will change the way you think about your job and careerand will inspire you to achieve more in all you do.

I think about the opportunities I have missed in my youth, but, now that I think of it, I havent missed anything. Im putting myself to the test, and Im taking those steps to greatness, even if it will take me years to get there. I must start someday, and that someday is...now.

    Mindful, purposeful practice makes perfect.

Author Geoff Colvin of FORTUNE magazine makes a convincing case that we tend t overrate talent as a success factor. He finds others keys to success: lots of hours doing what he calls purposeful practice. His argument has implications for success in all phases of life.

Colvins thesis is well constructed and compelling is a highly readable book. Superb! One of the best books Ive read in 2008!

Largely Based on HBRs "The Making of an Expert, July 2007
Rating Point :1 Helpful Point :0
This book is largely a rehash of a major peer reviewed article and may add unnecessary "Hamburger Helper" . In the paper "Making of an expert" by K. Anders Ericsson and others, Harvard Business Review, July 2007 they detail three well accepted conditions:

    1. Delibrate Practice - the author sites verbatim
    2. World class coaching
    3. Enthusiastic family support

The deliberate practice condition also encompasses the 10,000 hours requirement in becoming an expert whether that is business, music or sports to name a few endeavors. This translates into roughly what I call the 4/6/10 phenomena - 4 hours a day, 6 days a week for 10 years. Taking a few weeks off a year helps recovery so its about 1000 hours per year.
Of the three conditions, enthusiastic family support seems to be the catalyst for the other two. That article is well written and easy to read. You can go to that site and pick it up for $7. There are excellent peer reviewed references in that article worth reading. One of the key references is available at this site The Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance. It may be a little more academic but if you already have read "The making of an expert" and want more, then this is it.

Our country is in for a serious Depression, a real financial funk.

I hope the US Senate allocated funds in TARF for Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp, (PBGC), Medicaid and health insurers. If GM and Chrysler go Bankrupt, PBGC must pay pensions which is around 780 billion dollars.

PBGC does not provide Health and Welfare payment- health insurance. Do you have money set aside for those entities? That collapse will be around 780 billion by itself. That does not include unemployment for the auto and their suppliers which may be another 800 billion dollars.

The US senate would rather spend 1.5 trillion dollars in additional bailouts rather than fund a bridge loan for 40 million dollars. Wow, As a UM trained economist I am appalled at our Senate Leaders lack of expertise in basic economics. Our country is in for a serious Depression, a real financial funk.

You need to read, Breakin Out of Your Financial Funk! If the Auto companies go into bankruptcy employees will need this book as we are certainly going to be in a serious financial funk and everyone will need a book to help them pick up the pieces and start again. Or hold onto the pieces.

When a young man named Jesse Gelsinger died in 1999 as a result of his participation in a gene transfer research study, regulatory agencies in the United States began to take a closer look at what was happening in medical research. The resulting temporary shutdown of some of the most prestigious academic research centres confirmed what various recent reports in the United States as well as Canada had claimed; that the current system of regulatory oversight was in need of improvement.Law and Ethics in Biomedical Research uses the Gelinger case as a touchstone, illustrating how three major aspects of that case – the flaws in the regulatory system, conflicts of interest, and legal liability – embody the major challenges in the current medical research environment. Editors Trudo Lemmens and Duff R. Waring, along with a host of top scholars in the field, demonstrate why existing models of research review and human subject protection are in need of improvement, and how more stringent regulatory and legal means can be used to strengthen the protection of research subjects and the integrity of research. The contributors also address conflicts of interest, paying particular attention to the growing commercialization of medical research, as well as the legal liability of scientific investigators, research institutions, and governmental agencies. Legal liability is a growing concern in medical research and this fascinating study is, in the international context, one of the first to explore the liability of various parties involved in the research enterprise.

Now Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energyboth of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively. His argument speaks to all of us who are concerned about the state of America in the global future.

But they have not gone very far down Main Street the much-touted green revolution has hardly begun. With all that in mind, Friedman sets out the clean-technology breakthroughs we, and the world, will need he shows that the ET (Energy Technology) revolution will be both transformative and disruptive and he explains why America must lead this revolutionwith the first Green President and a Green New Deal, spurred by the Greenest Generation.

    Book Description

Thomas L. Friedmans phenomenal number-one bestseller The World Is Flat has helped millions of readers to see the world in a new way. In his brilliant, essential new book, Friedman takes a fresh and provocative look at two of the biggest challenges we face today: Americas surprising loss of focus and national purpose since 9/11 and the global environmental crisis, which is affecting everything from food to fuel to forests. In this groundbreaking account of where we stand now, he shows us how the solutions to these two big problems are linked--how we can restore the world and revive America at the same time.

Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the astonishing expansion of the worlds middle class through globalization have produced a planet that is hot, flat, and crowded. Already the earth is being affected in ways that threaten to make it dangerously unstable. In just a few years, it will be too late to fix things--unless the United States steps up now and takes the lead in a worldwide effort to replace our wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation that Friedman calls Code Green.

This is a great challenge, Friedman explains, but also a great opportunity, and one that America cannot afford to miss. Not only is American leadership the key to the healing of the earth it is also our best strategy for the renewal of America.

In vivid, entertaining chapters, Friedman makes it clear that the green revolution we need is like no revolution the world has seen. It will be the biggest innovation project in American history it will be hard, not easy and it will change everything from what you put into your car to what you see on your electric bill. But the payoff for America will be more than just cleaner air. It will inspire Americans to something we havent seen in a long time--nation-building in America--by summoning the intelligence, creativity, boldness, and concern for the common good that are our nations greatest natural resources.

Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman: fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge--and the promise--of the future.

Thomas Friedman and Fareed Zakaria: Author One-to-One

Fareed Zakaria: Your book is about two things, the climate crisis and also about an American crisis. Why do you link the two? Fareed Zakaria

Thomas Friedman: Youre absolutely right--it is about two things. The book says, America has a problem and the world has a problem. The worlds problem is that its getting hot, flat and crowded and that convergence--that perfect storm--is driving a lot of negative trends. Americas problem is that weve lost our way--weve lost our groove as a country. And the basic argument of the book is that we can solve our problem by taking the lead in solving the worlds problem.

Zakaria: Explain what you mean by "hot, flat and crowded."

Friedman: There is a convergence of basically three large forces: one is global warming, which has been going on at a very slow pace since the industrial revolution the second--what I call the flattening of the world--is a metaphor for the rise of middle-class citizens, from China to India to Brazil to Russia to Eastern Europe, who are beginning to consume like Americans. Thats a blessing in so many ways--its a blessing for global stability and for global growth. But it has enormous resource complications, if all these people--whom youve written about in your book, The Post American World--begin to consume like Americans. And lastly, global population growth simply refers to the steady growth of population in general, but at the same time the growth of more and more people able to live this middle-class lifestyle. Between now and 2020, the worlds going to add another billion people. And their resource demands--at every level--are going to be enormous. I tell the story in the book how, if we give each one of the next billion people on the planet just one sixty-watt incandescent light bulb, what it will mean: the answer is that it will require about 20 new 500-megawatt coal-burning power plants. Thats so they can each turn on just one light bulb!

Zakaria: In my book I talk about the "rise of the rest" and about the reality of how this rise of new powerful economic nations is completely changing the way the world works. Most everyones efforts have been devoted to Kyoto-like solutions, with the idea of getting western countries to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. But I grew to realize that the West was a sideshow. India and China will build hundreds of coal-fire power plants in the next ten years and the combined carbon dioxide emissions of those new plants alone are five times larger than the savings mandated by the Kyoto accords. What do you do with the Indias and Chinas of the world?

Thomas FriedmanFriedman: I think there are two approaches. There has to be more understanding of the basic unfairness they feel. They feel like we sat down, had the hors doeuvres, ate the entre, pretty much finished off the dessert, invited them for tea and coffee and then said, "Lets split the bill." So I understand the big sense of unfairness--they feel that now that they have a chance to grow and reach with large numbers a whole new standard of living, were basically telling them, "Your growth, and all the emissions it would add, is threatening the worlds climate." At the same time, what I say to them--what I said to young Chinese most recently when I was just in China is this: Every time I come to China, young Chinese say to me, "Mr. Friedman, your country grew dirty for 150 years. Now its our turn." And I say to them, "Yes, youre absolutely right, its your turn. Grow as dirty as you want. Take your time. Because I think we probably just need about five years to invent all the new clean power technologies youre going to need as you choke to death, and were going to come and sell them to you. And were going to clean your clock in the next great global industry. So please, take your time. If you want to give us a five-year lead in the next great global industry, I will take five. If you want to give us ten, that would be even better. In other words, I know this is unfair, but I am here to tell you that in a world thats hot, flat and crowded, ET--energy technology--is going to be as big an industry as IT--information technology. Maybe even bigger. And who claims that industry--whose country and whose companies dominate that industry--I think is going to enjoy more national security, more economic security, more economic growth, a healthier population, and greater global respect, for that matter, as well. So you can sit back and say, its not fair that we have to compete in this new industry, that we should get to grow dirty for a while, or you can do what you did in telecommunications, and that is try to leap-frog us. And thats really what Im saying to them: this is a great economic opportunity. The game is still open. I want my country to win it--Im not sure it will.

Zakaria: Im struck by the point you make about energy technology. In my book Im pretty optimistic about the United States. But the one area where Im worried is actually ET. We do fantastically in biotech, were doing fantastically in nanotechnology. But none of these new technologies have the kind of system-wide effect that information technology did. Energy does. If you want to find the next technological revolution you need to find an industry that transforms everything you do. Biotechnology affects one critical aspect of your day-to-day life, health, but not all of it. But energy--the consumption of energy--affects every human activity in the modern world. Now, my fear is that, of all the industries in the future, thats the one where were not ahead of the pack. Are we going to run second in this race?

Friedman: Well, I want to ask you that, Fareed. Why do you think we havent led this industry, which itself has huge technological implications? We have all the secret sauce, all the technological prowess, to lead this industry. Why do you think this is the one area--and its enormous, its actually going to dwarf all the others--where we havent been at the real cutting edge?

about a guy who supported the Iraq war but became a big opponent the moment the going got tough,as happens in most wars. This guy would have surrendered in WW2 after the Phillipines. You can choose to believe the man made global warming hoax,or you can write all day long about green energy, the fact remains until some economical viable solutions, fossil fuels rule. taxing fossil fuels to make them more viable is insane. the world is in a panic as oil falls back to 20 a barrel as it has before. guys like Freidmand,Obama, and Gore can only scream fire in the theater so often. Waste of money.

"The Lexus and the Olive Tree" was unique in its point of view. The writing was instructive and entertaining. Friedmans follow-up book, "The World is Flat," was a hit! New insight into seeing the world as it "is."

"Hot, Flat and Crowded" interprets the meaning of the word "is." Long-winded and lumpy, oft times boring, Friedman must have written this in Minneapolis while looking out the window. No new insight, here. Me thinks he went to the well once too often in this book.

Hell, who wants to pay $5/gal tax on gasoline to cut consumption of Arab oil? Why should everyone in the world be entitled to buy a car on some kind of subprime deal. The answer, Tom, is new kinds of energy, not how to make oil last longer as the fuel of choice.

Skip this one. You wont miss anything. Im sure Tom is working on a new book now that Obama is "in" and his Nobel Prize energy secretary at Livermore Berkeley National Laboratory is working on
an answer to Arab (and Russian) oil. Maybe a combination of wind, hot air and the atomic bomb!
A new way to view GREEN
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This book is a must read for any voting citizen. You may not like what he has to say but you should read it anyway. The book will help anyone understand the subject. The recent election and statements from the President elect shows how the Green issue is a major shapping force in American politics. Many people are worshiping at the Green alter. I know many dont understand what this Green thing is. Many view it as a feel good issue like dont club Baby seals. There isnt much argument to that. To others the green issue is a starting point to the one world government bent on destruction. This book shapes that issue in a new way that will help all parties. No matter what you believe this issue will truly haunt us in many different ways over the next few years.

Thomas Friedman here captures the issue like nothing else. Most books on the subject are nothing but sad stories about Bambi and the other creatures of the forest from nasel sounding failed politicians. All of those books were written by rich ex-politicans or whinny university professors who all dont have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. To 90% of the world living in the edge of poverty the Green religion has different meanings. This book takes a radically new approach to explaining things. He both shows the importance of the isse but tempers it with some reality.

Thomass reality on the world is a good read. The first half of the book shows in great detail the status of the world. He in very clear detail shows how population for the third world is going through the roof. Then he discusses the impact from that unrestrained growth. This growth has a huge impact on other things and vice versa. Growing populations need more energy. As they burn that energy damage from pollution grows and the demand on supply increases pushing up price. Friedmans discussion of this angle is excellent. It is clear, concise, and very believable. Christians who read it will swear they are reading a description of the last days, though Mr. Friedman doesnt talk about that. He says the pressure from this situation demands a "Green Revolution".

His ideas on how to start this revolution is really thought provoking. He has very specific ideas like a new electrical grid system for the country or how to use R&D monies to prime the research pump. Friedmans ideas do seem to rely heavily on optimism and humanism. His descriptions are very clear and entertaining. He has some little known stories that really enrich the story and do give hope. The stories make the issue real and not some vague ideology ex-liberals like to preach.

He does have some ideas worth exploring on the policy front. The recent President elects radio speeches sound like he has read this book. I am sure we all will see these ideas debated on TV news over the next year or so. That is why I think everyone should read this book. It will help you understand events.

Thomas Friedman brilliantly summarizes our chlidrens future if the world doesnt take a solidly green stand. Though initially terrifying, he does give us hope if the US government and businesses take action. Wake up America! Our families lives depend upon it. This book should be on everyones bedside table.
